How to Convert Recipes to Grocery Lists

When you already have your recipes on your phone or laptop, there's no need to scribble out a list of ingredients to buy. Here's how and why...

Planning what to eat for the week often involves juggling recipes, separately writing out a shopping list, or just winging it and hoping you'll remember when browsing. Most will probably relate to feeling stressed and how this approach is prone to missed ingredients.

A more efficient idea is to directly turn your weeks recipes into a grocery list. Many recipe organizer apps, such as Some Fine Food, offer features to simplify this process, helping you get organized before you head to the store. And we're all human, so it's fine to do this in the store too when we're not so prepared.

Why Convert Recipes Directly to Grocery Lists?

  • Save Time: Mostly, this is a massive time-saver where you can avoid having to weed back-and-forth through recipes and lists.
  • Reduce Mistakes: Minimize the chances of forgetting an essential item.
  • Simple Scaling: Adjust ingredient quantities for your recipes (e.g. for more servings), and the list updates automatically. You don't need to do the math.
  • Organized Shopping: Many apps, including Some Fine Food, can categorize grocery items by aisle, saving you from having to think too much when you're in the store or market.

How to Turn Your Recipes into Grocery Lists

This process varies from app to app, but I'm going to demonstrate how to get a grocery list from a recipe using Some Fine Food, which is pretty straightforward:

  1. Open Your Recipe: Navigate to the recipe you plan to cook with from your contents page. For this example, I'm choosing Djamal's Lamb Chorba, which is a lovely Algerian recipe picked up by Rick Stein in Cassis.

  2. Choose the "Add this Recipe to List" Option: Under the Grocery List menu in the main button (top-left of the screen), choose the Add this Recipe to List option. Illustrations of how to add recipe ingredients to a grocery list

  3. You will be asked what scale your want to add it at. This is to save you doing the math if you need to change the quantity you're cooking for (say, there's a dinner party). Choose a number, relative to the original recipe, or just leave it at "x 1" and tap add. Done. The ingredients have been saved to your grocery list. 4. View the Grocery List Tap the main menu button and go to the Grocery List menu, as before, but this time choose View List. Now you can see a list of every ingredient that has been added from your chosen recipes, scaled to whatever you chose. A small description at the top details what recipes were added, at what scale, and on what date, incase you're scratching your head wondering if everything's still relevant to this moment. 5. Sort by Aisle: My favourite part! It's all well and good having a list, but it still requires a lot of thinking about where is where and how to avoid needless doubling-back in a store. Tap sort aisles, just above the ingredient list, and Some Fine Food will sort and group ingredients into the section it believes they will be found in. This saves so much time and effort. 6. Found an Ingredient? Check it off, and concentrate on what's left. Some Fine Food remembers what you've checked off, whether on a phone or laptop, so feel free to check some off at home, before leaving, then pick up where you left off when browsing in the store or market. Or get some ingredients today, some tomorrow, and know what you already found. Illustrations of a grocery list sorted into aisles and items checked off

Tips for Effective Grocery List Management:

  • Review Before You Go: Quickly scan the generated list to ensure it makes sense.
  • Regularly Clear Old Lists: Or remove recipes from the list once you're done shopping for them to keep things tidy.

Using a recipe organizer to routinely convert your recipes into grocery lists can significantly reduce the effort needed for weekly chores and food shopping. It helps ensure you have everything you need, organized in a way that makes your trip to the store more efficient.
